AUBG Announces Two Cornerstone Initiatives to Empower Future Journalists

AUBG is proud to announce the launch of two transformative initiatives aimed at empowering the next generation of journalistic talent: the Christo Grozev Fellowship for Courageous Journalism and the Christo Grozev Scholarship Program.

“These initiatives underscore AUBG’s long-standing commitment to nurturing ethical and impactful journalism,” said AUBG President Dr. Margee Ensign. “The Christo Grozev Fellowship for Courageous Journalism and the Christo Grozev Scholarship Program represent our dedication to shaping the future of journalism—a future characterized by integrity, accountability, and unwavering dedication to truth and democratic values.”

Named in honor of Christo Grozev, a world-renowned investigative journalist and AUBG alum, the two programs will offer holistic support to emerging journalists seeking to follow in his footsteps.

The alumnus, who is a graduate of the first AUBG class and founder of the University radio AURA, was awarded the European Prize for investigative journalism in 2019 for his investigation into the poisoning of two Russian refugees in the United Kingdom, and two Emmy Awards for investigative journalism and outstanding research for his team’s identification of people responsible for poisoning Russian dissident Alexei Navalny. He also played a key role in the Oscar-winning documentary Navalny.

“This unimaginable recognition connects me profoundly with AUBG’s Journalism and Mass Communication program, which has been the most valuable launchpad in my life,” said Christo Grozev.

“I feel unworthy of having a scholarship and fellowship named after me, but I am committed to earning this trust. The scholarship aims to help underprivileged students achieve their maximum potential in journalism. To support this mission, I will make a personal donation to the scholarship fund and encourage my fellow alumni to do the same. Together, we can ensure the sustainability of this program and foster a continuous flow of talented and brave investigative journalists.”

Additionally, I pledge to volunteer my time as a mentor to journalism students and hope other alumni will join me in this effort.

The Christo Grozev Fellowship for Courageous Journalism will provide early to mid-career journalists with training, mentorship, and support to undertake significant investigative projects that uphold democracy, counter disinformation, and promote human rights, particularly in societies where democracy is under stress.

Simultaneously, the Christo Grozev Scholarship Program will provide comprehensive support to aspiring AUBG student journalists from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds. From financial assistance to mentorship and professional development opportunities, this program aims to empower deserving students to become impactful media professionals.
