Stefani Aleksandrova on Enhancing Democratic Processes | Advocacy Academy

For Stefani Aleksandrova, it is an exceptional opportunity to further elevate the impact and reach of the Alliance for Sustainable Regional Development (SRD4BG), where she serves as Co-founder and Chair of the Executive Board. As a leader dedicated to advancing sustainable development initiatives in Bulgaria, her participation in this groundbreaking initiative is not only aligned with the organization’s mission but also promises to significantly enhance its advocacy efforts and overall effectiveness. One of her main goals is to forge strategic partnerships with stakeholders, governmental bodies, and fellow NGOs to magnify the influence of sustainability efforts.

Stefani had the chance to work on this goal as a participant of the AUBG Advocacy Academy, in partnership with the Bulgarian Entrepreneurial Association (BESCO), during the spring of 2024.

Personal impressions

The Advocacy Academy training was a game-changer for me. As someone experienced in EU-level advocacy, the role-playing exercises were a revelation. They offered unique insights into the workings of the Bulgarian administration, business sector, and NGOs, highlighting their challenges and processes. While it’s hard to pinpoint a single transformative moment, the combination of role games and real-life simulations was especially impactful. These exercises provided a holistic understanding of the system and clarified my role as an NGO leader within it, significantly enriching my advocacy approach.

Moreover, the informal interactions with other participants were eye-opening. Discussing the political situation, elections, corruption, municipal approaches, development challenges, and issues in healthcare and education during breaks was truly enlightening. These conversations helped me understand “how things work in Bulgaria” and introduced me to like-minded “revolutionaries” facing similar challenges. These conversations were invaluable, providing solidarity and a shared sense of purpose among us.

Takeaways

The skills and knowledge I gained from the Advocacy Academy are already enhancing my effectiveness in my current role. One key area where I’m applying these learnings is in stakeholder engagement and coalition-building. The Academy provided profound insights into navigating diverse interests and fostering consensus, crucial as I collaborate with stakeholders across different sectors. I now have a clearer understanding of the challenges faced by key stakeholders in Bulgaria’s policy landscape, allowing me to tailor my advocacy strategies to resonate more effectively with each group’s concerns. Utilizing the communication and negotiation skills honed during the Academy’s simulations, I am forging stronger partnerships and aiming for more impactful advocacy outcomes.

As the co-founder and executive director of the NGO “Alliance for Sustainable Regional Development,” I am actively leveraging the skills gained from the Advocacy Academy to advocate for community-beneficial reforms. I have already applied this knowledge and formed partnerships with fellow participants, highlighting the Academy’s practical impact.

Impact

The Advocacy Academy drives positive change in Bulgaria by advancing policy advocacy and enhancing democratic processes. Through its curriculum and hands-on training, the program equips participants with advanced advocacy skills and knowledge. Key to its impact is promoting coalition-building among diverse stakeholders, including government officials, businesses, NGOs, and community leaders. These coalitions strengthen advocacy efforts and foster consensus-driven policymaking that aligns with citizens’ needs.

Leadership development is another pivotal aspect, empowering participants to drive change within their communities and foster civic engagement and democratic governance. Armed with practical tools and strategies from the Academy, we’re not just advocates—we’re advocacy warriors! Our campaigns are poised to shape public discourse and influence policy decisions with impact and finesse. Many of us are already launching advocacy campaigns and organizing community training sessions, proving that the Academy’s influence is both powerful and long-lasting.

Highlights

The networking and collaboration opportunities in the program have been extraordinary. The most valuable aspect has been connecting with a group of influential, like-minded individuals, all driven by the desire to enact positive change and contribute to Bulgaria’s development.

As an NGO leader, forming relationships with individuals from various ministries, impactful NGOs and foundations, and some of Bulgaria’s most impact-driven businesses is incredible. These connections have broadened my perspective and provided a support network of friends eager to assist with any idea, project, or request. This collaborative environment is truly remarkable and will profoundly influence my work, enhancing my ability to drive meaningful change.

Piece of advice

Given the challenging political landscape in Bulgaria, my aspirations in advocacy and leadership focus on driving policy changes, particularly in sustainable development, and fostering a more inclusive and transparent governance system. I aim to leverage the skills and networks developed through the Advocacy Academy to champion reforms that address critical societal issues and empower marginalized communities. My goal is to become a catalyst for positive change, inspiring others to engage actively in advocacy efforts and contribute to our country’s democratic development.

To future participants of the Advocacy Academy, my advice is to fully embrace every opportunity the program offers. Engage actively in discussions, network with fellow participants, and apply the knowledge gained to real-world challenges. The Academy is not just about learning; it’s about building lasting relationships and creating a support network of like-minded individuals who share your passion for change.

For anyone considering participating in the program, I highly recommend it to aspiring advocates, NGO leaders, politicians, policymakers, individuals working in the Bulgarian administration, and civil society activists. The Academy is particularly beneficial for those eager to enhance their advocacy skills, build powerful coalitions, and make a tangible impact in their communities. It’s an invaluable experience for anyone committed to advancing policy advocacy and strengthening democracy in Bulgaria.
