Accessibility and Inclusion Support Coordinator

The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) is seeking to hire an Accessibility and Inclusion Support Coordinator. The role ensures compliance with relevant accessibility, inclusion, and sexual and gender-based discrimination policies, providing support and accommodations for students with disabilities, and fostering a safe and inclusive campus environment through education, training, and advocacy. This role involves coordinating resources, liaising with campus departments, and developing strategies to prevent and address discrimination and harassment.

Key Responsibilities:

Policy Implementation and Compliance:

  • Enhances and implements policies to ensure compliance with ADA, EU standards, Bulgarian legislation, and U.S. Title IX requirements.
  • Regularly reviews and recommends updates to policies for legal compliance and best practices.

On-campus Advocacy, Education, Communication and Collaboration:

  • Develops, implements, coordinates, and conducts educational programs and initiatives to educate and support faculty, staff, and students regarding their rights and obligations under relevant Bulgarian, EU, and US legislation. This includes informing them about reporting options, support services, University policies, disciplinary codes, grievance procedures, and confidential resources. Additionally, the coordinator organizes educational campaigns and trainings on diversity, accessibility, inclusion, Title IX, and sexual harassment, and conducts workshops and information sessions for the campus community.
  • Collaborates with leadership and campus constituencies to disseminate information, redesign processes, and support the University’s investigative processes.
  • Acts as a liaison between students and campus departments such as academic affairs, student affairs, facilities, and the legal advisor.
  • Oversees the Sexual Harassment Hearing Panel and ensures proper training.
  • Enhances response strategies for sexual harassment and misconduct incidents.
  • Ensures a cohesive approach to accessibility and inclusion of the AUBG campus community.

Accommodation Coordination and Individualized Support and Guidance for Students with Disabilities:

  • Coordinates academic, co-curricular and campus living and learning accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Serves as the primary contact for students needing accessibility and inclusion support.
  • Informs and supports faculty about the academic accommodations needed by their students, with the support of the Dean of Faculty and the Dean of Students.
  • Ensures campus facilities meet accessibility standards.
  • Assists students in accessing campus resources and accommodations.

Organization and Participation in Initiatives and Forums:

  • Organizes and participates in university and community forums on accessibility, inclusion, and diversity, and develops and implements initiatives to foster an inclusive campus culture.
  • Networks with external organizations for best practices and developments in the field.
  • Develops and implements diversity initiatives to promote an inclusive campus culture.
  • Works with various departments to integrate diversity and inclusion practices into campus activities and policies.

Resource Coordination, Assessment and Feedback:

  • Identifies and allocates resources for accessibility and inclusion initiatives.
  • Maintains records and data on accessibility efforts and discrimination incidents.
  • Gathers feedback to address concerns and enhance accessibility and inclusion initiatives.
  • Prepares reports on policy effectiveness and recommends improvements.

Requirements and Desired Qualifications:

  • University Degree preferably in a related field: education, psychology, social work, anthropology, law.
  • Native or near-to native (min.C1-level) fluency in oral and written English.
  • Strong understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and practices.
  • Intercultural competency and sensitivity to issues of gender, sexuality, and personal identity.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Counseling background is preferred.
  • Basic fluency in Bulgarian language is preferred.
